Cast:  Ricky Davao, Irma Adlawan, Reggie Curley, Lauren Novero, Alcris Galura, Justin De Leon, Joven Velasco, Ruby Ruiz, Ching Danseco, Laisa Gonzales, Jess Evardone, Gilvert Arevalo, Noel Miralles, Jennifer Tan, Carme Sanchez

STRAY CATS (PUSANG GALA) is an odd but in the end endearing mixture of cinematic styles, soap opera drama, tender little comedy, and hefty measures of relationship philosophy: perhaps this is the Filipino brand of magical realism. Based on a play by Jun Lana and adapted for the screen by Rody Vera and writer/director Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil, the movie boasts a fine little cast and it is the cast's commitment to the project that sets the film sailing.

Boyet (Ricky Davao), a mother-like gay man who takes in stray cats (including the human form), lives in an apartment complex: his next door neighbour is Martha (Irma Adlawan), a successful business woman whose evenings are usually spent alone pining for her often absentee boyfriend of five years, Steve (Reggie Curley). Martha and Boyet are close friends, to the point that Boyet's writing career is focused on the love tangles of Martha as well as his own absentee lover situation with the manipulative Dom (Lauren Novero). Boyet has a live-in 'son', JoJo (Alcris Galura), a lad whose street life as an abandoned boy has stuck the heart of the mothering Boyet. The story bounces between Boyet's and Martha's fantasies about their boyfriends' commitment problems, and while each of the two character's love lives are well defined (both straight and gay and in between!), the method of the story telling makes dissecting fact from fantasy a bit of a challenge. The ending of the film contains a twist that will surprise audiences who expect a light fluffy comedy.

238.  Ano ang Kulay ng Mukha ng Diyos? (1986)
Directed By:  Lino Brocka

Cast:  Gina Alajar, Michael De Mesa, Edu Manzano, Caridad Sanchez, Katrin Gonzales, Vic Silayan, Joonee Gamboa, Subas Herrero, Jaime Fabregas

A street hustler falls in love with a bar girl. They get married, but separate when the guy gets meted a death sentence after gunning down a rich customer of the bar in a fit of jealousy. The bar girl bears the hustler's child. The child becomes blind at a tender age because she fails to get timely medical care when she contracts an illness. The kid sleeps on church pews at times.

The bar girl plies the flesh trade to make ends meet. She brefriends a beat reporter who shows genuine care for her and the kid. The reporter somewhat plans a reunion with the convicted hustler, the bar girl and the kid in prison. The hustler comes to his senses and belatedly realizes the importance of life. He takes his own, but not without first donating his eyes to his blind daughter. After an operation, the child regains her eyesight. Bar girl and reporter fall in love.

The genius of Brocka is his ability to humanize the proletariat, the dregs that society ignores and turns a blind and cynical eye on. Brocka shows us that there is love, hope and salvation even in crushing poverty and despair.

This movie is a fairy tale. Sentiment is played up and everything falls into place at the last frame. But the Filipino-ness of the feel and pulse of this movie, old as it is, jolts you into questioning your very character as a present-day citizen, living in the very city where the lives depicted in Mukha are as real and constant as Metro Manila's polluted air.

Kaaway ng Babae is not a gay film, of course, but a light farce about a woman-hater, perhaps even a black comedy, wherein a prominent society bachelor, Daniel Ricamora (Jose Padilla Jr), after his third and most traumatic experience with a woman, decides to turn his back on womankind for the rest of his life. "Sumpain ang mga babae!," he exclaims. Together with his best male buddies, Daniel makes everyone take a solemn vow to curse all women: "Kaming mga kaaway ng babae ay buong pusong sumusumpa... na tatalikod nang lubusan sa mga naka baro't saya!". The group goes on a self-imposed exile to an island owned by Daniel's family and Daniel immediately instructs the island's caretaker, Mang Pedro, to rid the entire island of all women. Mang Pedro quickly cuts off the hair of his lovely daughter, Lydia (Lilia Dizon), and dresses her up like a man. She changes her name to Tenorio and is introduced to Daniel. Another World Record For World Peace Through Inner Peace

56, 860 candles were initially lit to break the previous world record set by Pakistan in 2009

Few minutes later, the rest of the candles were lit bringing the total number of candles being lit to 100,000

Another Guinness World Record has been broken and created in the Queen City of the South, Iloilo in the town of Oton last night Monday, April 14, 2014. The initial lighted candles of 56,680 is enough to set a new world record of largest flaming image using candles previously set by Pakistan on December 10, 2009 with 35,478 candles however minutes later, the rest of the candles were lighted bringing the total number of candles lit to 100,000. This world breaking event is about prayer and meditation spreading the message "World Peace Through Inner Peace" uniting different religious groups - Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, government organizations, non-profit organizations, institutions and most especially the youth. Last year, Iloilo flown 15,185 to set a new world record for the most number of sky lanterns flown previously set by Romania in June 2012 with 12,470 sky lanterns flown.

20 Years Of Internet Connection In The Philippines

It's the 20th year anniversary of Philippines connection to the world through Internet started on March 29, 1994.

Altavista, Lycos, Yehey, Webcrawler are just some of the Filipino search engines in the 1990s and early 2000s.

Mozcom is the first commercial Internet service provider in the Philippines founded in 1994 by William "Bill" Torres, regarded as the Father of Philippine Internet and Willy Gan.

mIRC, is the most popular Internet chat room in the Philippines

Twenty years ago on March 29, 1994, the Philippines finally gets connected to the world through the Internet. The Internet first made its connection to the Philippines on March 29, 1994. On that date the Philippine Network Foundation (PHNet) connected the country and its people to Sprint in the United States via a 64 kbit/s link.

Here are just some of the significant dates in the history of the Internet in the Philippines:

August 1986: The first Philippine-based, public-access BBS [bulletin board system], First-Fil RBBS went online with an annual subscription fee of P1,000. A precursor to the local online forum, it ran an open-source BBS software on an IBM XT Clone PC with a 1200bps modem and was operated by Dan Angeles and Ed Castañeda.

1987: The Philippine FidoNet Exchange, a local network for communication between several BBSes in Metro Manila, was formed.

1990: A committee helmed by Arnie del Rosario of the Ateneo Computer Technology Center was tasked with exploring the possibility of creating an academic network of universities and government institutions by the National Computer Center under Dr. William Torres. Recommendations were made but not implemented.

1991-1993: Emergence of email gateways and services in the Philippines, including some from multinational companies like Intel, Motorola, and Texas Instruments, which used a direct Internet connection, X.25, or UCCP protocol. Local firms ETPI, Philcom, and PLDT also operated commercial X.25 networks. Another milestone: Local and international email to FidoNet users was introduced.

June 1993: With the support of the Department of Science and Technology and the Industrial Research Foundation, the Philnet project (now PHNET) was born. The Philnet technical committee, composed of computer buffs working at the DOST and representatives from the Ateneo de Manila University (Richie Lozada and Arnie del Rosario), De La Salle University (Kelsey Hartigan-Go), University of the Philippines Diliman (Rodel Atanacio and Rommel Feria), and University of the Philippines Los Baños, would eventually play a significant role in connecting the Philippines to the World Wide Web.

July 1993: Phase one of the Philnet project shifted into full gear after receiving funding from the DOST. It proved to be successful, as students from partner universities were able to send emails to the Internet by routing them through Philnet's gateway at the Ateneo, which was connected to another gateway at the Victoria University of Technology in Australia.

November 1993: An additional P12.5-million grant for the first year's running cost was awarded by the DOST to buy equipment and lease communication lines needed to kickstart the second phase of Philnet, now led by Dr. Rudy Villarica.

March 29, 1994, 1:15 a.m.: Benjie Tan, who was working for ComNet, a company that supplied Cisco routers to the Philnet project, established the Philippine's first connection to the Internet at a PLDT network center in Makati City. Shortly thereafter, he posted a short message to the Usenet newsgroup soc.culture.filipino to alert Filipinos overseas that a link had been made. His message read: "As of March 29,1994 at 1:15 am Philippine time, unfortunately 2 days late due to slight technical difficulties, the Philippines was FINALLY connected to the Internet via SprintLink. The Philippine router, a Cisco 7000 router was attached via the services of PLDT and Sprint communications to SprintLink's router at Stockton Ca. The gateway to the world for the Philippines will be via NASA Ames Research Center. For now, a 64K serial link is the information highway to the rest of the Internet world."

March 29, 1994, 10:18 a.m.: "We're in," Dr. John Brule, a Professor Emeritus in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Syracuse University, announced at The First International E-Mail Conference at the University of San Carlos in Talamban, Cebu, signifying that Philnet's 64 kbit/s connection was live.

2012 - The Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, codified as Republic Act No. 10175, criminalized cybersquatting, cybersex, child pornography, identity theft, illegal access to data and libel. The act has been criticized for its provision on criminalizing libel, which is perceived to be a curtailment in freedom of expression. After several petitions submitted to the Supreme Court of the Philippines questioned the constitutionality of the Act, the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order on October 9, 2012, stopping implementation of the Act for 120 days.

2013 - A Magna Carta for Philippine Internet Freedom has been filed in the Philippine legislature to, among others, repeal Republic Act No. 10175.
